The lead story involves a space expedition traveling at nearly three times the speed of light who encounter space pirates hiding among planetoids; the volunteers are captured and must escape, eventually discovering a prehistoric landscape and landing their ship. A second story, "Wonders of Sea Life," documents unusual sea creatures including squid, which glow in the dark and are considered a delicacy, and discusses the variety of creatures inhabiting Earth's oceans.
Major Dan Barton leads a mission to investigate a mysterious force disrupting Earth, first suspecting the Moon, then venturing toward Venus—where his crew is met with hostility despite their peaceful intentions. As they uncover that the disturbances stem from an unintended scientific project on Venus, the crew must navigate a tense diplomatic situation while trying to prevent a war.
Captain Hi Juddson leads a secret mission aboard a ship equipped with a revolutionary vacuum propulsion system, testing its limits as he and his crew—Bill Frankman and Tommy Lawson—race toward the moon and beyond. When they encounter a fleet of space pirates hiding among planetoids, Juddson devises a daring plan using the ship’s extreme speed to trap the enemy in a contained vacuum, relying on both ingenuity and a lucky rabbit’s foot.
"Halley's Comet" explores the celestial journey of the famed comet, named after astronomer Edmund Halley, who first calculated its 75-year orbit and predicted its return—though he never lived to see it confirmed. The story traces the comet’s appearances throughout history, from its legendary sighting in 1066 to its scheduled return, highlighting Halley’s groundbreaking work in astronomy.
In the year A.D. 5092, Dr. Steve Crain and Major Strong encounter a mysterious, seemingly impossible landscape in space known as "Witches' Road," a place that defies logic and appears to shift and change before their eyes. As they investigate, they discover the land is not haunted by ghosts, but instead holds a profound, recorded history of all time and space—revealing that every action ever taken is etched into the fabric of reality itself.
Jo, a scientist examining a slide under a microscope, is stunned to see a tiny man—Jeffreys—appearing beneath the lens, pleading for help. Jeffreys reveals he was a former researcher who used a shrinking serum to study microbes, only to become trapped at a microscopic scale, now calling out from the slide. As Jo struggles to decide whether to trust what he sees, he’s confronted with a desperate choice: follow Jeffreys’ instructions to use the serum as an antidote, or dismiss the vision as delusion.
In this 1956 non-fiction feature from *Mysteries of Unexplored Worlds*, readers explore the strange and fascinating world of sea creatures, from the glowing, ink-secreting squid and salmon that leap waterfalls to the gentle, shark-fearing porpoise and massive whales whose bones are used in mattress stuffing. The story highlights the odd behaviors of creatures like the flounder, whose eye migrates to one side as it matures, and touches on cultural uses of marine life, all while weaving in playful puzzles and oddities from the era’s popular culture.
