Paula and Hal are engaged, but she doesn’t want to get married “in time of wars and uncertainty.” She remembers her parents struggling during the Depression and her father’s death in WWII. Hal says “we’ve got to get married soon or break it off,” and they separate. Paula dates other men but still loves Hal. She overhears an elderly couple who regret not having married earlier, having postponed their wedding repeatedly for more than 30 years. She tracks down Hal and says she’ll marry him immediately.
