My Own Romance #27
In "That Old Feeling," Barbara faces a quiet crisis of memory and longing when her husband Fred suggests a trip to her hometown. Revisiting her past, she fears her first love, Gary, will reawaken old feelings—only to discover that time and nostalgia have painted him far differently than reality. Jerry Robinson’s expressive art captures the emotional weight of this personal reckoning, while Al Hartley’s cover beautifully frames the story’s bittersweet tension.

Barbara is married to Fred, but can’t forget her first boyfriend Gary. When Fred suggests a visit to her hometown, Barbara is afraid what will happen if she sees Gary. By the time they arrive, she has convinced herself that she’s bored with Fred and will run off with Gary if he asks. However, it turns out “the years and my imagination had made him something he never had been!” Gary is cheap, common, ignorant and unstable. Barbara decides Fred was the right choice after all.
