To support her parents, Lillian goes to work for bookmaker Barney, and soon becomes a trusted employee. She falls in love with Johnny, a gambler hated by Barney. Johnny claims he’ll quit gambling, go legit, and marry Lillian if she forges a betting slip that pays him $10,000. Barney finds out, and Lillian learns Johnny had pulled the same scam on another of Barney's women workers. Johnny tells Lillian he really loves her, but is gunned down by Barney. Lillian will never know if his love for her was sincere.
