My Greatest Adventure #39

A vivid snapshot of early 1960s DC anthology storytelling, this issue of My Greatest Adventure leads with the breathless cover story "I Was Bodyguard to a Beast!" — and the cover by Dick Dillin and Sheldon Moldoff delivers exactly the wild promise that title suggests. A snarling pink gorilla hoists a man overhead while two armed police officers close in, the trapped man pleading "Don't shoot — I've got to protect this beast, even though it wants to kill me!" It's the kind of wonderfully absurd, high-stakes scenario that made this anthology series such a fun read, and with interior art from Joe Kubert, Mort Meskin, and George Roussos, the storytelling inside is in very capable hands.
