Ms. Marvel #12
Ms. Marvel (2015) #12 marks the first appearance of Red Dagger (Kareem), a non-powered Pakistani vigilante who operates out of Karachi and becomes one of Kamala Khan's most significant supporting characters and eventual romantic interest. His debut expanded the series' geographic and cultural scope beyond Jersey City, rooting Kamala's Pakistani heritage in a tangible, active way that few superhero books had attempted — a local hero protecting his own community without any origin-event superpowers. The issue also stands as a milestone in the series' post-Civil War II reset, using a done-in-one Karachi story to explore the 'third-culture kid' experience of not feeling fully at home in either one's adopted country or ancestral homeland. The issue was written by G. Willow Wilson and drawn by Italian artist Mirka Andolfo, who was making her Marvel debut on this issue, with colors by the series' long-running colorist Ian Herring and letters by Joe Caramagna. It was published in October 2016 as part of the All-New, All-Different Marvel era (Vol. 4), following the Civil War II crossover event that had left Kamala deeply shaken. Wilson used the Karachi setting to give Andolfo's warmer, expressively distinct visual style a deliberate tonal contrast to Jersey City, while Herring's coloring reinforced the 'we aren't in New Jersey anymore' atmosphere praised by reviewers at the time.
