“Food for Villainy”

Monster Party! Part One of Two" kicks off with a cover that puts Mister Miracle and a companion front and center, both looking decidedly alarmed as a horde of snarling, barely-contained brutes — including a fang-toothed blue-haired wild man and a hulking bald bruiser — surge up behind them, all overshadowed by a colossal, leering monster face filling the sky. Joe Phillips and Karl Story deliver a composition that's genuinely energetic, with the threat pressing in from every direction and leaving Scott Free precious little room to escape. Written by Doug Moench with interior art by Joe Phillips and Romeo Tanghal, this April 1991 issue launches a two-part story that promises the world's greatest escape artist has finally found a party he might not be able to walk out of.
