About this Issue

Mighty Thor #22 (August 2017) marks the first full appearance of Sindr, the Queen of Cinders — daughter of Surtur and heir to the throne of Muspelheim — making it a meaningful character-introduction issue within one of Marvel's most ambitious long-form cosmic narratives of the 2010s. The issue plants the seeds for Malekith's Dark Council and the escalating multi-realm conflict that Jason Aaron had been threading across years of Thor storytelling, all of which culminated in the 2019 War of the Realms event. Structurally, the issue is also notable for juggling two simultaneous Thors — Jane Foster's Mighty Thor and Volstagg's fury-driven War Thor — in a single story without losing dramatic coherence, a storytelling feat that reviewers at the time noted was uniquely difficult to sustain. Marvel itself later selected this issue for inclusion in the official War of the Realms Prelude trade paperback, signaling its editorial weight as a foundational chapter in that macro-story.

History

The issue was written by Jason Aaron, with interior pencils and inks split between series regular Russell Dauterman (credited on page 1) and Valerio Schiti (pages 2–20), with colors by Matthew Wilson, Veronica Gandini, and Rain Beredo, and letters by Joe Sabino. It was edited by Wil Moss, Sarah Brunstad, and Tom Brevoort under Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso, and went on sale August 16, 2017 with an October 2017 cover date. The issue follows directly from Mighty Thor #21, in which Surtur was assassinated by Thor Odinson — an event Sindr explicitly references upon her debut, anchoring her character's motivation in the immediate continuity Aaron had just established.
