Mighty Thor #1
Mighty Thor #1 (2016) is the formal title launch for Dr. Jane Foster as the Goddess of Thunder — the first time a woman had taken the Thor name, the hammer, and her own headlining series simultaneously at Marvel, cementing what had begun in the 2014 Thor series into a fully realized ongoing. Writer Jason Aaron built an audacious dual narrative engine into the premise from the very first issue: every time Jane transforms into Thor, Mjolnir's power burns the chemotherapy from her mortal body, meaning her greatest heroism is also killing her — a storytelling tension rarely attempted in mainstream superhero comics. The series went on to inspire the 2022 film Thor: Love and Thunder, bringing the Jane Foster incarnation of Thor to a global cinematic audience. After Secret Wars reshaped the Marvel line, Jason Aaron and artist Russell Dauterman relaunched their collaboration under Marvel's All-New, All-Different initiative, picking up the Jane Foster story directly from where Thor (2014) #1–8 had left it. The 2014 series had kept Jane's identity secret from readers and characters alike; the new title, with its emphatic name change to The Mighty Thor, doubled down on her ownership of the mantle. Dauterman also served as cover artist, designing the distinctive gatefold wraparound cover that became the issue's signature presentation. The series ran 23 issues before transitioning to Marvel Legacy numbering at #700, and the entire Aaron–Dauterman body of work was later collected in two oversized omnibus editions totaling over 2,500 pages.
