Marvel Universe #1 kicks off this 1998 series with the Invaders front and center — Captain America braces behind his star-spangled shield while the bare-chested, blue-haired Namor tears through armed enemies with his fists, and the blazing form of the Human Torch lights up the background in a wall of fire. Armed soldiers in green uniforms press in from every angle, making the cover by Carlos Pacheco and Cam Smith a genuinely charged scene of wartime heroics. With Roger Stern scripting and Steve Epting on interior art, "The Spoils of War!" looks like a confident, action-packed showcase for Marvel's golden-age super-team.
