Marvel Tails Starring Peter Porker the Spectacular Spider-Ham #1
Marvel Tails Starring Peter Porker the Spectacular Spider-Ham #1 (November 1983) is the first appearance of Peter Porker / Spider-Ham — an anthropomorphic pig who inhabits the parody universe Earth-8311 — along with the simultaneous debuts of Captain Americat, Hulk Bunny, Goose Rider, J. Jonah Jackal, and the supporting cast of the Daily Beagle. The issue established Marvel's most durable funny-animal franchise, one that proved the publisher could sustain superhero parody beyond occasional one-shots and would directly spawn a 17-issue ongoing series under the Star Comics imprint. Decades later Spider-Ham became a cornerstone of the Spider-Verse mythology and earned a prominent role in the Academy Award-winning animated film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), making this one-shot the origin point of a character whose cultural footprint vastly outgrew its modest Bronze Age origins. The title is also a deliberate pun on the companion Marvel Tales reprint series, signaling from the cover that the book understood — and reveled in — its own absurdity.

The book grew out of a conversation between Marvel editors Tom DeFalco and Larry Hama about the company's inability to produce plush toys; Hama, a fan of Carl Barks-style funny-animal comics and a veteran of Marvel's humor magazine Crazy!, suggested a talking-animal superhero title, and DeFalco immediately pitched the spider-pig concept. Editor-in-chief Jim Shooter greenlit the project as a potential licensing vehicle, and penciller Mark Armstrong — himself a Crazy! alumnus — was brought on to draw the characters, with inks by Joe Albelo. The one-shot was expected to be a disposable experiment: DeFalco later recalled believing it had 'bombed out' when the licensing division passed on the plush-toy pitch, but Marvel president James Galton informed him the issue had sold roughly twice the newsstand average for a standard Marvel comic, which directly led to the launch of the ongoing Peter Porker, the Spectacular Spider-Ham series under the Star Comics imprint in 1985.
