About this Collection

This volume of Marvel Masterworks collects the first six issues of The Incredible Hulk's original 1962 series, written by Stan Lee and illustrated by Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko. It presents the Hulk's earliest adventures, including his debut and initial encounters with the military and the Teen Brigade, establishing the character's foundational lore in the Marvel Universe.

In "The Coming of the Hulk, Part 1," Stan Lee and Jack Kirby deliver a gripping chapter of the Hulk's origin, with Kirby's dynamic artwork and Dick Ayers' bold inks bringing the tension to life. When military forces capture Rick, General Ross manipulates him into using the Hulk as a test subject for a new rocket—only for Rick to discover the truth too late. The cover by Jack Kirby captures the moment’s intensity, with the sunlit sky and the looming figure of the Hulk setting the stage for an unforgettable transformation.

The military captures Rick and Ross convinces him that they need the Hulk to test a new experimental rocket for national security. Rick tricks the jade giant into the capsule but once it is shot into space, he realizes that Ross deceived him to get rid of his foe. Rick overrides the programming and returns the rocket to earth but not before Banner (he transformed back to his human form when the rocket came into view of the sun) is doused with further radiation. The Hulk is now unable to revert to his human form and is under Rick's control but only while Rick remains awake.
