Martian Manhunter #4
The finale of DC's four-issue Martian Manhunter mini-series arrives with a cover that pulls no punches: a battered, bleeding J'onn J'onzz lunges forward through a gauntlet of enormous alien claws on a barren, rust-colored Martian landscape, red eyes burning with sheer determination. Mark Badger's raw, visceral artwork — all jagged lines and bold neon color — gives the scene an almost feverish intensity that feels perfectly suited to a story called "Welcome Home." It's a striking send-off image for this 1988 series, and J. M. DeMatteis and Badger clearly saved some of their most dramatic energy for the closing chapter.
