History

Mark Spears, a Huntsville, Alabama-based artist with credits spanning Spawn, Action Comics, Power Rangers, and multiple Rondo Hatton Horror Award wins, first developed the Monsters property as a retro-style trading card series launched on Kickstarter in 2021, deliberately evoking the feel of 1970s and 1980s monster card sets. The property graduated to comics form through a separate Kickstarter campaign for issues #1–#8 before Keenspot Entertainment became the publisher of record, with issue #1 reaching stores in September 2024. By issue #6 the series had proven durable enough to support variant programs — including licensed Vampirella covers courtesy of Dynamite Entertainment — and would soon spin off a prequel mini-series, *Mark Spears Monsters: The Monster and the Wolf*, focused on the Werewolf character Clint Abbott.
