History

The Monsters universe originated when Huntsville, Alabama-based artist Mark Spears — a Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Award winner — launched a self-published retro-style trading card series via Kickstarter in 2021, heavily influenced by the hyper-realistic monster portraiture of Famous Monsters of Filmland cover artist Basil Gogos. A second Halloween Edition followed in 2022, and the property was picked up by the Nacelle Company for licensing before Keenspot Entertainment announced the comic book adaptation in mid-2024, launching it in September of that year as a bi-monthly series with Spears serving as sole writer, artist, and cover illustrator. Issue #7, solicited for September 2025 release through both Diamond Comic Distributors and Lunar Distribution via Keenspot's arrangement with Execution Posse Holdings, continued the series into its second year of publication.

The central plot of #7 involves the Monster Slayer being held at gunpoint by police while a mysterious new figure seeks allies, and the Werewolf being brought by Frankenstein's monster to a house full of creatures of the night.
The Golden Man, whose first appearance is in issue #6, continues into #7, making #6 the key debut issue for that character — not #7.
The series is set in the early 1980s and features original characters (Slayer, Bryan Macintosh, Joe Skorzeny, Maldor Darkmoon, Mad Hatter/Theodore Theopolis) alongside archetypal monster figures (Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, Werewolf, Igor).
