“Chapter 4 - If Monsters Are Real...”
About this Issue

Mark Spears' Monsters #4 is the fourth chapter in an indie horror series notable for being one of the few ongoing comics to emerge organically from a creator-owned trading card property — Spears' own Kickstarter-launched card sets from 2021 and 2022 — rather than the reverse. The issue deepens the series' ensemble cast of both original characters (the Slayer, detectives Mac and Skorzeny, the three kids) and public-domain monster archetypes, demonstrating the creative vitality possible at a small publisher when a single artist controls writing, art, and covers simultaneously. Its arrival in shops in April–May 2025, followed by at least a second printing, reflects the series' growing readership within the direct market and its place as a genuine breakout from the 2020s indie horror renaissance. The issue also introduced the Crowley estate as a formal location within the series' early-1980s setting, a narrative anchor that subsequent issues continued to develop.

In "Chapter 4 - If Monsters Are Real...", Mark Spears delivers a gripping installment of his monster-infused saga, with the writer and artist (also handling inks and colors) crafting a tense, atmospheric tale that deepens the mystery surrounding the sudden rise of the undead. As Darkmoon and his apprentice press on, three boys uncover a horrifying transformation at Crowley's mansion, while police and unlikely allies like Slayer and Dokuhebi brace for an escalating threat—only for a chilling twist to unfold when hitchhiker Clint Abbott’s true nature is revealed in a shocking jailhouse transformation. The cover by Mark Spears captures the story’s growing dread with stark, expressive detail.

History

The series grew out of Mark Spears' hyper-realistic, Basil-Gogos-influenced trading card sets, the first of which he launched on Kickstarter in 2021. Spears, a Huntsville, Alabama-based artist who won the Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Award for Artist of the Year in 2020 and subsequently built a profile as a cover artist for Image's Spawn titles, DC's Action Comics, and Boom Studios' Power Rangers, brought the property to Keenspot Entertainment as an ongoing comic beginning in September 2024. Issue #4 — the first to ship in 2025, with a cover date of April/May 2025 — was solicited in Keenspot's March 2025 Diamond/Lunar catalog and features lettering by Micah Myers alongside Spears' solo writing and art.
