History

The Monsters universe originated with Spears Art LLC, a company founded by Mark Spears — a Huntsville, Alabama-based artist who built his reputation doing trading card sketch work for DC and Marvel before launching his own monster-themed trading card Kickstarter in 2021, styled as a retro throwback to 1970s–80s card sets and heavily influenced by Famous Monsters of Filmland cover artist Basil Gogos. That card franchise, which expanded to a Halloween Edition in 2022, eventually led Spears to pitch a comic adaptation; the ongoing series debuted from Keenspot Entertainment in September 2024, with Spears handling all writing and interior art duties and Micah Myers serving as letterer. Issue #3 arrived in comic shops on January 29, 2025, and sold out quickly enough to warrant a second printing with new cover variants.

The issue shipped with at least eight cover variants including Cover A (Frankenstein's Monster), Cover B (Dracula & the Brides), Cover C (Ilsa), Cover D (Dracula Homage), Cover E (25th Anniversary Witch Homage), a Holofoil Flip, a Metal cover, and a 1:25 retailer incentive.
