“Breakaway Girl”

In "Breakaway Girl," Shirley’s quick thinking to rescue a kitten trapped in a tree takes an unexpected turn when the van she uses to climb up vanishes beneath her. Left stranded mid-tree, she’s surprised to be rescued by a young man who admits he’s afraid of heights—though not as much as she is about what comes next. The moment takes a personal turn when the van’s owner confronts Reg, leading to a confession that changes everything. Art by Daniel Garcia, this 1959 issue captures a quiet, tender moment of connection with a touch of whimsy, all rendered in the distinctive style of its creator.

When Shirley sees a kitten trapped in a tree, she uses a van parked underneath the tree to help her climb up to rescue it. However, when she looks down, the van is gone. She yells for help and a young man climbs up to her, but looks down and tells her he is scared of heights. When they finally climb down, the owner of the van asks Reg why he moved the van. Reg confesses he did it to get to know her better.
