The final issue of Mike Carey, Peter Gross, and Ryan Kelly's long-running Vertigo series closes with a quietly haunting cover by Christopher Moeller: a winged Lucifer in a long black coat walks away down a rain-slicked city street, his back to us, the neon glow of the Lux sign fading behind him. The cover quote — "Perhaps this is the ultimate freedom, eh, Dream Lord? The freedom to leave…" — captures the mood of a series that always found its most compelling drama in defiance and departure. A fitting send-off for one of Vertigo's most ambitious titles.
