“The Breach, Part 1 of 3”

Mike Kaluta's cover for this 2005 Vertigo issue sets a haunting, atmospheric tone: a winged figure in a flowing dress reaches upward toward a jagged, crackling rift that tears through the composition, while a skull-like presence looms in the swirling darkness behind her and a solitary trench-coated figure stands small at the bottom of the breach. Written by Mike Carey with art by Peter Gross and Ryan Kelly, Lucifer #59 opens "The Breach," a three-part story that promises the kind of cosmic unease this series does so well. If the cover is any indication, the tear between worlds is very much the point.
