“An End, a Beginning”

Lucifer holds court in brooding stillness at the foreground of this 2017 Vertigo cover, his crimson eyes and sharp tuxedo cutting a striking figure while a shadowy cocktail party swirls behind him — horned figures, a woman in red, and a mysterious hooded guest clutching a martini glass all suggest a gathering that's anything but ordinary. Lee Garbett's artwork balances moody noir atmosphere with a darkly elegant social scene, colored beautifully by Antonio Fabela. With Richard Kadrey's "An End, a Beginning" as the story title, issue #19 feels poised at a meaningful threshold.
