Lord Arux realizes that someone intercepted his letter for Lucifer in order to have Lucifer present in Effrul on the Eve of Candles. Rudd tricks Lady Lys into ingesting the pure suffering of the damned, filling her with regret and guilt. Seviram and his conspirators attempt to bring down Lord Arux and replace him with Lucifer, but they fail because Rudd had informed Lord Arux of Grieve’s dying words. Lucifer gives Seviram a soul before killing him, so he can spend eternity as one of the damned.
