Joy is going steady with Bill, but with Bill often working late at the factory, Joy goes to the fair with some friends and meets Steve. Soon Joy realizes she loves Steve and breaks off with Bill. Steve is a talented piano player, but doesn't seem to have much ambition in that area and is happy with the way things are. Joy gives a tape recording of Steve's playing to the daughter of a theatrical agent. Carol prods her father to give Steve a chance and he becomes successful. However, Carol wants Steve and is in a position to help his career while Joy sees less and less of him.
