Love Story Picture Library #1089
In "They Knew What They Wanted," Helen—pragmatic and wary of actors after a past disappointment—finds herself drawn into a web of deception when her friend Betty, chasing a modeling dream in London, asks her to hire someone to pretend to be her fiancé. The ruse begins with a simple request, but Helen doesn’t realize the man she’s hired is more than just a stand-in—his presence stirs something unexpected in her, and the lines between performance and truth begin to blur. Cover by Albert Pujolar Soler, with typeset lettering, this 1973 issue captures a quiet, bittersweet moment in a love story where intentions are clear, but feelings aren’t.

Helen works for a theatrical agency, but thinks all actors are heels because of a bad experience with one. Her friend Betty shows up in London to pursue a modeling career, but Betty's boyfriend from back home intends to come to London to talk her into coming back. Betty tries to dissuade him by writing and telling him she is engaged. When that doesn't work, she asks Helen to hire an actor to pretend to be her fiance. Reluctantly, Helen agrees, but doesn't realize who she has actually hired.
