Love and Rockets: New Stories #7
In "Killer in Palomar," Gilbert Hernandez weaves a layered narrative across decades, tracing the quiet echoes of family and memory in the fictional town of Palomar. Through intimate flashbacks, we glimpse moments between Maria and her father Fernando, between young Fritz and his mother Guadalupe, and between Maria and her daughter Doralis, all connected by unspoken truths and fleeting encounters. The story unfolds with Hernandez’s signature emotional precision, rendered in his distinctive, expressive style, while the cover by Jaime Hernandez captures the tale’s melancholic warmth.

A story with multiple flashbacks. In the first, Maria talks to the infant Fritz and watches a comedic Mexican movie she had starred in. Fast forward to Fritz's teenage years, Maria dismisses her father Fernando in no uncertain terms after he turns up unexpectedly. Decades later, Maria makes Doralis promise that she won't tell anyone they've met. In an early-Twentieth Century flashback, Fernando holds the baby Maria and chats with Maria's mother Rosalba, his now-ex. In the final flashback, Fritz holds the infant Killer and chats with Guadalupe.
