Love and Rockets: New Stories #5
In "Somewhere Outside the U.S. Border," Jaime Hernandez crafts a quietly tense narrative where a series of mysterious phone calls from Mel, the Cobia Club owner, unsettle Vivian as she waits for a connection that never comes. Meanwhile, Tonta’s unexpected visit to Vivian’s home takes a sudden turn when a gun left in the dresser fires by accident, setting off a chain of events that leads to a shocking moment at the club, where Borneo’s attempted assassination of Spropp reveals a chilling link to the earlier incident. The story unfolds with Hernandez’s signature emotional precision, drawing out suspense through small, telling details.

While at the Cobia Club, Mel, the owner tells Vivian he'll call her. Back at home, Vivian receives multiple phone calls from someone, presumably Mel, who hangs up when she picks up the phone. While Vivian's out, a visiting Tonta tries out her lingerie and plays with a gun that was in the dresser. The gun goes off accidentally, leaving a small hole in the wall. Borneo, Sugar Bear and Tito show up and distract Tonta while Sugar Bear retrieves the gun. Back at the Cobia Club later on, Tonta witnesses a failed assassination attempt on Spropp by Borneo with the same gun that was in Viv's dresser.
