Long Bow accepts the challenge despite warnings that a riper from the enemy tribe will come, and pursues the calf with his companions. After a violent confrontation in which six of Long Bow's band are killed by Red Eagle's warriors, Long Bow and his allies pursue their enemies and strike back, ultimately defeating them with help from the mysterious spirit of Big Thunder's Cave, whose stone guardian face Long Bow recognizes as having appeared to him before.
Long Bow and a companion discover a treacherous plot when they stumble upon a white man named Josh Cutter trading guns to High Bear in exchange for raiding the Ute villages—a betrayal of the fragile peace between the tribes. Pursued through mountain wilderness by High Bear's warriors, the boys must use their wits to escape and reach the Ute camp before the raids begin.
