About this Issue

Li'l Jinx #1 (November 1956) is the solo debut of one of Archie Comics' most enduring child characters, graduating a nine-year veteran of backup strips into her own headlined title at the height of the mid-1950s kiddie-comic boom. The issue marks the formal establishment of the Holliday family household — Jinx, her father Hap, and her mother Merry — as the central stage for a distinctly parent-child-centered comedy at a time when most Archie-line humor orbited teenagers. As the opening chapter of a short but seminal run, it also planted the storytelling template — mischievous child vs. long-suffering adult — that Edwards would develop across formats for decades, and that later writers would revisit and radically reimagine well into the 21st century.

History

Joe Edwards, a Manhattan-born artist who joined MLJ Comics (Archie's corporate ancestor) in 1942, created Li'l Jinx after his wartime service and debuted her in Pep Comics #62 (July 1947) as the daughter of a couple named Mr. and Mrs. Bubblegum — a slightly older, Tex Avery-styled tomboy. By the time the 1956 solo series launched, Edwards had quietly reworked the character: she was de-aged, re-homed with the Holliday family, and rendered in a softer art style closer to the house aesthetic of contemporary kiddie comics. Edwards drew directly on his own experiences as a father for the strip's scenarios, and the character's Halloween birthday was a tribute to his son Ken, who shared that birth date.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Published November 1956 by Archie Comic Publications, Inc.; cover and indicia both identify it as Vol. 1, No. 1 — the character's first dedicated solo title.
  • Created and drawn by Joe Edwards (December 6, 1921 – February 8, 2007), who worked in the comics industry for over 65 years and is best known for this creation.
  • Li'l Jinx (full original surname Bubblegum, later Holliday) had previously appeared as a backup feature in Pep Comics beginning with issue #62 (July 1947), making 1956 her graduation to a solo book after nearly a decade of supporting-feature appearances.
  • The issue introduces the core Holliday household: Jinx, her father Hap Holliday, and her mother Merry Holliday — the domestic trio around which all Jinx comedy is organized.
  • Supporting cast member Greg (Jinx's occasional childhood boyfriend) is among the recurring neighborhood friends present in the series from its outset.
  • The series ran bimonthly for six issues — #1 (Nov. 1956) followed by #12–16 (Jan.–Sep. 1957) — after which the title's numbering transitioned into Little Archie in Animal Land.
  • Li'l Jinx stories ranged in length from three-panel blackout gags to seven-page narratives across the solo run, reflecting Edwards' range as a humor cartoonist.
  • The issue also features backup appearances by Archie-line characters indexed in this catalog — including the Riverdale gang (Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead, Reggie), Katy Keene, Super Duck, and others — consistent with the anthology format Archie used for its kiddie titles in this period.
