About this Issue

Kid Venom #3 is the penultimate chapter of the first solo series ever given to Kintaro (Sakata Kintoki), Marvel's first Japanese historical-folklore-rooted symbiote hero, and it marks the first appearances of two characters drawn directly from Heian-era Japanese mythology: the spirit Gedomaru and the legendary onmyōji (court sorcerer) Abe no Seimei. By bringing genuine figures from 10th-century Japanese folklore into the Marvel symbiote cosmos, the issue extends the creative experiment that made this series notable — demonstrating that the Venomverse's multiverse structure could meaningfully absorb non-Western mythological traditions rather than merely re-skin existing Western archetypes. As the third installment of a four-issue limited run, it pivots the arc toward its conclusion by centering on an interdimensional portal, a structural beat that foreshadows Kintaro's eventual crossing into the main Marvel 616 continuity.

History

Kid Venom itself grew out of a 2018 manga contest jointly held by Shonen Magazine and Marvel, for which Taigami — a professional manga creator whose prior work included Unsung Hero — submitted a one-shot using a Marvel theme; he chose symbiotes and arrived at the concept of grafting the classic Japanese folkloric figure Kintaro onto the Venom mythos. The character debuted as backup stories in Death of the Venomverse #2–#5 (2023) during Marvel's 'Summer of Symbiotes' initiative, was then collected in the standalone Kid Venom: Origins #1 (January 2024), and finally graduated to his own four-issue series beginning July 2024, with Taigami serving as sole writer, artist, and cover artist throughout — an unusually unified creative vision for a mainstream Marvel title.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Released November 6, 2024 (cover-dated January 2025); issue #3 of a four-issue limited series (Kid Venom Vol. 1).
  • First appearance of Gedomaru, a new character within the Kid Venom corner of the Marvel multiverse (Earth-91029).
  • First appearance of Abe no Seimei in the Kid Venom series — a figure drawn from real Heian-era Japanese history and folklore, here introduced into Marvel's symbiote mythology.
  • Written, penciled, inked, and covered entirely by Taigami (full name Taigami Hatano), with colors by Mattia Iacono and letters by Joe Sabino.
  • The issue's central plot engine is an interdimensional portal — Kintaro must return a mysterious child to her home universe — directly setting up the series finale in which he crosses into the Marvel 616.
  • Variant covers for this issue were provided by Philip Tan (homage variant), Ivan Tao (1:25 incentive variant), and Luciano Vecchio.
  • The series as a whole originated from Taigami's entry in a 2018 Shonen Magazine/Marvel manga contest, making Kid Venom one of the rare Marvel characters whose creative DNA traces directly to a formal Japan–Marvel publishing collaboration.
  • Kid Venom: Origins #1 (January 2024) collected the character's four-part debut from Death of the Venomverse #2–#5, meaning issue #3 of this series represents the third chapter of Kintaro's first fully original solo narrative rather than a retelling.
