About this Issue

Kid Venom #2 marks the first appearance of Ashiya Doman in the Marvel Universe — a figure drawn from Heian-period Japanese folklore — deepening the series' commitment to grounding symbiote mythology in authentic Japanese history and legend. The issue also continues the only Marvel ongoing set in 10th-century feudal Japan, with Sakata Kintoki (the adult identity Kid Venom received at the end of issue #1) at the center of an escalating conflict that begins pulling multiversal threads into his era. As the second chapter of Taigami's four-issue limited series, it is part of a broader creative achievement: a manga artist working in a distinctly manga-inflected style producing a mainstream Marvel superhero comic rooted entirely in Japanese cultural mythology rather than Western superhero tradition.

History

The Kid Venom series grew directly out of a pitch Taigami submitted to a manga contest co-hosted by Shonen Magazine and Marvel in 2018, where contestants were required to use a Marvel theme as the basis for an original first episode. Taigami chose symbiotes and fused that concept with the Japanese folkloric hero Kintarō, reasoning that the symbiote landscape needed something entirely new to stand apart. After the character debuted as backup stories in Death of the Venomverse (2023) and was collected in the one-shot Kid Venom: Origins #1 (January 2024), Marvel greenlit a four-issue solo limited series; issue #2 landed September 4, 2024, with Daniel Khazem editing and Mattia Iacono providing colors to complement Taigami's fully self-executed line art.
