About this Issue

Kid Venom #1 is a historically significant entry in the Marvel symbiote mythos because it is the first issue of Kintaro's solo series and firmly establishes the Heian-era corner of the Marvel Universe that Taigami built. The series broke genuine new ground by situating a symbiote hero entirely within Japanese folklore and history — a creative departure from the Western urban settings that had defined every prior Venom-family title. It also marked Marvel's first major publication to grow directly out of a joint Marvel/Shonen Magazine manga contest, making it a rare case of a fan-competition concept earning its own ongoing series at the House of Ideas. The issue further expands the Marvel symbiote taxonomy, introducing a distinct class of hostless oni-symbiotes whose existence seeds the multiverse-crossing storyline that runs through the entire four-issue run.

History

The seed of Kid Venom dates to 2018, when Taigami — a manga artist best known for Unsung Hero — submitted a one-shot entry to a joint contest co-hosted by Marvel Comics and Shonen Magazine; entrants were required to use a Marvel theme or character as the basis for a debut series episode, and Taigami chose symbiotes. The concept sat dormant until 2023, when Marvel brought Taigami aboard its 'Summer of Symbiotes' initiative and ran his Kid Venom story as a four-part backup across Death of the Venomverse #2–5, giving Kintaro his first canonical appearances. Fan response was strong enough that Marvel collected those chapters in the January 2024 one-shot Kid Venom: Origins #1, then fast-tracked the dedicated four-issue limited series — with Taigami continuing as sole writer, penciller, and inker, colored by Mattia Iacono and edited by Daniel Khazem — launching on July 10, 2024.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First issue of Kintaro/Kid Venom's solo four-issue limited series (Kid Venom Vol. 1), written, pencilled, and inked entirely by Taigami.
  • First appearances of Usui Sadamitsu, the Minamoto Samurai Corps, Watanabe no Tsuna, and Urabe no Suetake; first full appearance of villain Ibara; first silhouette appearance of Abe no Seimei.
  • Kintaro receives his adult name, Sakata Kintoki, during a coming-of-age ceremony in this issue — a direct lift from the real Heian-era legend of Kintarō.
  • Clinter, Kintaro's symbiote, is established as unique among Marvel symbiotes: it cannot feed on adrenaline and instead survives by consuming other symbiotes, absorbing the powers and memories of their former hosts.
  • The issue introduces 'hostless' tsuchigumo oni-symbiotes — a new wrinkle in symbiote biology, as Clinter cannot fully defeat a symbiote that has no host to expose.
  • Kid Venom originated from a 2018 entry Taigami submitted to a joint Marvel/Shonen Magazine manga contest; the character concept lay dormant for five years before Marvel developed it for Death of the Venomverse (2023).
  • Taigami explicitly drew Kintaro's character from the Japanese folkloric/historical hero Kintarō of the Heian Era — a boy who later became one of the four samurai of Minamoto no Yorimitsu — blending that legend directly with Marvel's symbiote mythology.
  • The series and its collected edition (Kid Venom: Origins #1 plus Kid Venom #1–4) represent Marvel's first major manga-creator-led symbiote title set entirely outside the modern Western world.
