About this Issue

Justice League Dark #12 (Vol. 1, 2012) launches the 'War for the Books of Magic' arc, the storyline that fully cemented Jeff Lemire's vision for DC's supernatural team and its place within the wider New 52 universe. The issue delivers the New 52 origin of Doctor Mist as Nommo Balewa — reframing the character with a grounded, tragic backstory rooted in East African civil war and personal loss — while also presenting Doctor Occult's New 52 appearance as keeper of the House of Secrets, a role that ends in his on-panel death. Equally notable is the issue's casual-yet-resonant treatment of the Zatara legacy: Constantine recounts the New 52 retelling of John Zatara's death at the hands of a Great Darkness, tying the new continuity back to the spirit of Alan Moore's 'Swamp Thing' era. The issue also plants an early, pre-naming reference to the Sphere of the Gods — calling it the 'Etherverse' — making it a quiet piece of New 52 cosmological architecture.

History

Jeff Lemire took over writing duties on Justice League Dark from founding writer Peter Milligan beginning with issue #9, bringing regular series artist Mikel Janin back into the fold after some fill-in work. Issue #12 was edited by Brian Cunningham, with Katie Kubert as assistant editor, and colored by Ulises Arreola and lettered by Rob Leigh. It was published on August 22, 2012, with a cover date of October 2012 and a cover by Ryan Sook. The issue opens the 'War for the Books of Magic' arc, which Lemire structured across issues #12–13 and the Justice League Dark Annual #1, weaving together the occult mythology he had been building since his debut on the title.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Published August 22, 2012 (cover date October 2012); written by Jeff Lemire, interior art by Mikel Janin, cover by Ryan Sook, colors by Ulises Arreola.
  • Story title: 'War for the Books of Magic, Part 1' — the opening chapter of a multi-part arc that continues in #13 and concludes in Justice League Dark Annual #1.
  • Delivers the New 52 origin and full reveal of Doctor Mist as Nommo Balewa: a physician from Northern Uganda who turned to tribal mysticism after his wife Mosa was killed in civil war, and who then infiltrated A.R.G.U.S.'s Black Room as a spy for Felix Faust in exchange for a chance to master death through the Books of Magic.
  • Features a significant New 52 appearance of Doctor Occult as the keeper of the House of Secrets; he is murdered by the arc's hidden villain (Nick Necro) so that control of the House can pass on.
  • Contains an early New 52 reference to the magical collective realm, named 'Etherverse' in this issue — a concept the DC cosmology would later formalize as the Sphere of the Gods.
  • Constantine recounts the New 52 retelling of John Zatara's death during a 'Great Darkness' event, directly evoking — but re-contextualizing — the events originally depicted in Alan Moore's Swamp Thing (Vol. 2) #50 during Crisis on Infinite Earths.
  • Features cameo/supporting appearances by Sargon the Sorcerer (John Sargent), Mento (Steve Dayton), Timothy Hunter, Black Boris (cannibal king of the Fire Trolls, menacing Constantine and Black Orchid in Slaughter Swamp), and Blackbriar Thorn (attacking Zatanna and Deadman in Peru).
  • Reprinted in the trade paperback 'Justice League Dark: The Books of Magic' (New 52, Vol. 2) and in both the Justice League Dark: The New 52 Compendium and the Justice League Dark: The New 52 Omnibus.
