“Macho Magic”

Jughead hits the ski slopes in this February 1987 issue, and the cover — penciled by Dan DeCarlo — says it all: our crown-capped hero stands nervously on skis at the top of a steep run, muttering "Gulp!! Getting down alive!!" while a ski instructor addresses the assembled class about their "number one objective." The snowy mountain backdrop and the gaggle of bundled-up students (including a few familiar Riverdale faces peeking from the corner) set a wonderfully comic scene. With Samm Schwartz handling the interior art and George Gladir scripting "Macho Magic," this is a warm, funny slice of Archie Comics charm at its mid-'80s best.
