“The Reel Thing”

A teacher's stern command — "Jughead, I expect you to bury your nose in this book tonight!" — sets the stage perfectly on this December 1968 cover, with Jughead standing sheepishly in his distinctive polka-dot shirt while a classmate looks on nearby. Dan DeCarlo's pencils (inked by Rudy Lapick) deliver the punchline in the panel below: that textbook has clearly gone unread, replaced by a guitar, a Riverdale pennant, and general chaos on the floor. It's a wonderfully relatable snapshot of teenage priorities, wrapped in the cheerful, warm humor that made Jughead a staple of the Archie Series.

writer Frank Doyle · artist Bill Vigoda · inker Mario Acquaviva · letterer Bill Yoshida · cover Dan DeCarlo, Rudy Lapick
