Judy Canova has big dreams when her neighbors back in Cactus Junction scrape together enough money to send her to Hollywood, but the journey gets off to a rocky start when a stowaway named Pedro ends up hidden in her trunk. Once she arrives at the studios, Judy's enthusiasm keeps getting her into trouble—from accidentally stepping in fresh cement to crashing rehearsals—until one chaotic mishap accidentally lands her on film and catches the attention of the studio brass. Now she's got to prove she has what it takes to be a real movie star, complete with all the strange demands that come with the territory.

Pedro thinks he's found the perfect scheme: posing as the great Swami Hatigrandhi to tell fortunes at a local ball, complete with a crystal ball he's eager to practice with. But when the real fortune teller arrives in town and the authorities start cracking down on illegal fortune telling, Pedro's got some fast talking to do to avoid getting caught—and to keep impressing his crush Juanita in the process.

Judy Canova borrows an old camera to take pictures for an amateur contest, determined to win a prize by photographing everyone in Cactus Junction—with the help of her nervous friend Lukey. As she and Lukey scramble to shoot, develop, and print their photos before the contest deadline, their homespun darkroom setup and questionable photography skills lead to a series of mishaps that somehow produce something entirely unexpected.
