Journey into Mystery #45

A superb piece of mid-1950s Atlas horror craft, this April 1957 issue of Journey into Mystery features a cover by Bill Everett that drips with dread: a wide-eyed man recoils in the doorway of a dimly lit room, staring in horror at an armchair where a figure sits motionless, smoke curling ominously into the air and scattered newspapers lying at their feet. The teaser text — "What Happened to Harrison?" and "The Demon's Shadow!" — promises exactly the kind of unsettling, question-mark mystery that made this Atlas anthology series so compelling. Interior art by Ted Galindo, with colors by Stan Goldberg, rounds out what is a genuinely atmospheric package for any fan of pre-Marvel suspense comics.
