The main story features young Jim Marker seeking revenge against Johnny Wayne, the son of the man who killed Jim's father, but Wayne proves himself to be honorable and determined to win Marker's respect as a man rather than through violence. After a bitter desert chase in which Wayne is pursued by a posse and shot at, with his horse killed beneath him, Wayne faces Marker in a final confrontation where Marker demands Wayne shoot an unarmed man to even the odds—a test Wayne refuses, declaring he won't live with murder on his conscience. Moved by Wayne's integrity, Marker ultimately abandons his vendetta and the two part as men of principle.
