In "The Stranger's Revenge," Wayne helps solve a murder mystery at the Keel's Ranch, where a man named Henry Marker has been killed and an important envelope containing evidence of a mortgage payment has disappeared, while a woman named Miss Murdock seeks justice for her murdered brother. In the second story, Wayne is aboard a ship where he confronts a crew of thieves, smugglers, and murderers; the ship's captain proposes they settle their dispute through hand-to-hand combat, with the winner claiming the vessel and determining its course.
When John Wayne and Bonanza Bill stumble upon a burning ranch house, they rescue Lariat Thompson—a man resigned to a terrible fate he's been expecting. The truth shocks them both: his own daughter, a masked woman hiding in the Amazon Hills, is responsible for the destruction, driven by a hatred of men that runs so deep she's made herself judge and executioner. As Wayne and Bill ride into her territory to confront her, they find themselves caught in a dangerous game where they're no longer hunters but hunted prey.
When a simple favor for his old friend Bill Keels—meeting the incoming train—goes terribly wrong, John Wayne finds himself wrongly accused of murder and facing a lynch mob. Forced to flee and dig deeper into the truth, Wayne uncovers a desperate father's attempt to save his troubled son from the gallows. This eight-page western pits justice against loyalty, as Wayne races to prove his innocence and expose the real killer before the town takes the law into its own hands.
When an eagle attack leaves Bonanza with a broken arm, he and John Wayne ride into town seeking a doctor—only to find their physician murdered, with a sealed envelope addressed to Wayne mysteriously vanished. As they piece together the mystery, they discover that the envelope held proof of payment for a crucial mortgage, and a ruthless ranch owner named Henry Marker will stop at nothing to keep that receipt hidden and steal the Murdock family's land. Now Wayne and Bonanza must ride straight into danger to expose Marker's scheme and save the last of the Murdock family from ruin.
John Wayne and his friend Bonanza head to San Francisco for a birthday celebration, but their night in the bustling port city takes an unexpected turn when they're knocked unconscious and shanghaied aboard a ship engaged in the smuggling trade. Forced to labor in the scorching engine room alongside a crew of unwilling workers, Wayne must rally the men to rebel against the ship's ruthless captain and reclaim their freedom. It's a birthday party that veers from barber shops and fancy dinners into high-seas action and bare-knuckle confrontation.
Silent Sam settles in to spin a yarn about the time he tracked down Black Pete, a murderous outlaw who'd massacred innocent stagecoach passengers and fled into Indian country with his renegade allies. When Silent Sam learns of Black Pete's plan to massacre and burn the town, he races back to mount a desperate defense—but the real showdown comes when he corners the outlaw on the trail and they face off, neither sure who'll walk away alive.
