The series was conceived by BOOM! Studios in partnership with The Jim Henson Company as a deliberate lead-up to the 1986 film's 40th anniversary in 2026, with the project first publicly announced around the time of San Diego Comic-Con 2023. Writer Kyla Vanderklugt, a Canadian illustrator and writer with prior credits on Jim Henson properties, and Rome-based artist Giorgio Spalletta — who co-created Alice Never After for BOOM! Studios and trained and teaches at the International School of Comics in Rome — were chosen as the creative team. The series launched with issue #1 in September 2024 and was published through BOOM!'s Archaia imprint, with colorist Sara Cuomo and letterer Jim Campbell rounding out the production team throughout the run.
