History

BOOM! Studios, in partnership with The Jim Henson Company, conceived the project as a direct adaptation of Smith's novelization — explicitly framed as distinct from the 1986 Marvel Comics film adaptation drawn by John Buscema — and announced it ahead of San Diego Comic-Con 2023 through their Direct Reserve crowdfunding initiative. Originally scoped at 160 pages across six issues, crowdfunding stretch goals expanded the series to 224 pages and eight issues total, with issue #6 shipping March 5, 2025. Writer Kyla Vanderklugt, a Canadian illustrator with prior credits on Jim Henson anthology properties, was paired with Italian artist Giorgio Spalletta, whose background includes co-creating Alice Never After for BOOM! and teaching at the International School of Comics in Rome; colorist Sara Cuomo and letterer Jim Campbell rounded out the creative team.

• Issue #6 adapts the ballroom sequence from Smith's novel, in which Jareth attempts to kiss Sarah and she pulls away — a scene with no direct equivalent in the finished film, as the David Bowie musical number replaced it.
