History

The series grew out of a partnership between BOOM! Studios (publishing under its Archaia imprint banner) and The Jim Henson Company, formalized and announced publicly in the lead-up to San Diego Comic-Con 2023 as part of a broader Direct Reserve crowdfunding campaign on Gamefound. Writer Kyla Vanderklugt (known for Demon in the Wood) was tapped to script all eight issues, with Italian artist Giorgio Spalletta — co-creator of Alice Ever After for BOOM! Studios and a faculty member at the International School of Comics in Rome — handling interior art throughout the run, with coloring by Sara Cuomo and lettering by Jim Campbell. The source text is Smith's novelization, which was itself written while Jim Henson was still completing the film in 1986 and was personally overseen by Henson; that production quirk is the reason the novel diverges from the finished film, and those divergences are exactly what give the comic series its editorial identity. Issue #1 arrived in shops September 18, 2024, with #5 following on January 29, 2025.
