The series grew out of a partnership between BOOM! Studios' award-winning Archaia imprint and The Jim Henson Company, announced in mid-2024 ahead of the 1986 film's fortieth anniversary. What began as a planned 160-page, six-issue run was expanded by crowdfunding milestones into a 224-page, eight-issue series, with #1 reaching shops on September 18, 2024 and #4 arriving December 25, 2024. Writer Kyla Vanderklugt (Demon in the Wood) and Italian artist Giorgio Spalletta (Alice Never After, Alice Ever After) — whose prior collaboration history made them natural partners — were joined by colorist Sara Cuomo and letterer Jim Campbell to form the complete creative team across all eight issues.
