Jeff the Land Shark was conceived by writer Kelly Thompson after a particular baby landshark drawn by artist Stefano Caselli in West Coast Avengers vol. 3 #1 (2018) caught her eye; she built a distinct character around that image, drawing inspiration from her own pet cats. Jeff was formally named and adopted by Gwen Poole in issue #7 of that series, with art by Daniele di Nicuolo. After years of popularity through Thompson and Gurihiru's Eisner Award-winning Infinity Comics series and a high-profile debut as a playable character in the video game Marvel Rivals in December 2024, Marvel greenlit this first-ever print solo limited series — announced at ComicsPro in early 2025 — pairing Thompson with artist Tokitokoro. The series was explicitly described by Thompson as an opportunity to tell the kind of structurally complex, multi-issue narrative that the short-form Infinity Comic format could not accommodate.
