Iron Fist #6 is a cornerstone issue of Marvel's Bronze Age street-level universe because it delivers the origin of Misty Knight's bionic arm in flashback — the pivotal backstory of one of Marvel's most significant characters, who holds the distinction of being the first Black female superhero published by Marvel Comics. History

By August 1976, Chris Claremont had recently transitioned from a Marvel editorial staff role to full-time freelancing, simultaneously scripting Iron Fist, Uncanny X-Men, and other titles — a creative juggling act that allowed him to cross-pollinate characters across books in ways that expanded the Marvel Universe organically. John Byrne, in some of his earliest Marvel penciling work, was his collaborator on Iron Fist from the series' outset, and the two brought a cinematic, character-driven sensibility to what might otherwise have been a disposable martial-arts cash-in. Marv Wolfman served as editor, and the issue's cover was handled by veteran Gil Kane with inks by Frank Giacoia — a different team from the Byrne/Chiaramonte interior crew, a common Bronze Age split between cover and interior assignments.
