Incredible Hulk #49
The cover by Kaare Andrews takes a wonderfully storybook approach, rendered in a loose, watercolor-tinged style that feels more like a children's book nightmare than a superhero slugfest. Under a crescent moon, a roaring green Hulk and a hulking grey companion loom menacingly over a small, bespectacled man in a white shirt who stumbles backward in terror — it's an image that's genuinely playful and unsettling in equal measure. With Bruce Jones writing and Stuart Immonen and Scott Koblish handling interiors, this 2003 issue of The Incredible Hulk promises the kind of tense, off-kilter storytelling the series was delivering so well at the time.
