Incredible Hulk #92 is the opening chapter of 'Planet Hulk,' the storyline that fundamentally repositioned Bruce Banner's alter ego — not as a misunderstood brute crashing through Earth's military infrastructure, but as an exiled gladiator fighting for survival and ultimately a revolution on an alien world. By transplanting the Hulk into a science-fantasy register drawn from classical gladiator epics, writer Greg Pak created a self-contained mythological arc that gave the character his deepest sustained emotional journey to date and directly seeded the 2007 crossover event World War Hulk. The issue also introduces an entire new corner of the Marvel cosmos: the planet Sakaar, its oppressive Red King, the warrior Caiera the Oldstrong, and the insectoid Miek — characters significant enough to later appear in a Marvel Animation direct-to-video feature and, in reimagined form, in the MCU blockbuster Thor: Ragnarok.

In "Planet Hulk Exile: Part One," the Hulk crashes on the brutal planet Sakaar after learning the truth about a betrayal by Reed Richards and others back on Earth. Written by Greg Pak and illustrated by Carlo Pagulayan, this pivotal issue launches the iconic Planet Hulk saga, with José Ladrönn's striking cover capturing the Hulk’s arrival in a world where he must fight for survival.

History

The concept originated with Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada's suggestion to send the Hulk off-planet, which writer Greg Pak then developed during a Marvel editorial summit around 2005, drawing on gladiator tales and spaghetti-western sensibilities to craft what he envisioned as a self-contained epic. Pak had originally pitched a different Earth-bound story called 'Gammaworld,' but the editorial directive to exile the character proved transformative, giving Pak a blank canvas on which to build an entirely new civilization. The issue was written by Pak with interior pencils by Carlo Pagulayan, inks by Jeffrey Huet, colors by Chris Sotomayor, and a cover by the Venezuelan artist José Ladrönn; it was edited by Mark Paniccia with Nathan Cosby as assistant editor, and carried a February 8, 2006 on-sale date under a April 2006 cover date.
