# Hopalong Cassidy #56 This issue contains two stories. In the main story, "The Ranch Ruse," Hopalong confronts a small, elderly woman who claims to have discovered fires and helped extinguish them as a family tradition, but Hopalong becomes suspicious of her connection to the ranch fires. Later, Hopalong pursues a bear through the hills and attempts to tire it out by running in circles, eventually trapping the animal. In the backup story "Absent-Minded Abernathy: The Cat's Meow," Abernathy encounters old friends and becomes involved in a comedic misunderstanding involving a cat that he puts to bed, which leads to him accidentally kicking himself down the stairs.
