About this Issue

Hellverine #9 — titled 'Hell Bent' — is the narrative climax of the ongoing series' 'Hell Hulk Unleashed' arc, in which Hell Hulk tears open a literal gateway between Earth and Hell, forcing an uneasy alliance between Akihiro and Mephisto. The issue is a pivotal character moment for Akihiro: it is here that he fully accepts his identity as Hellverine and achieves a decisive resolution against both the Hell Hulk and the arc's primary villain Severith. It also confirms Mephisto as a recurring structural antagonist-turned-reluctant-ally in this corner of the Marvel Universe, a dynamic that gives Benjamin Percy's supernatural mythology its moral complexity. The issue is later collected in the trade paperback Hellverine Vol. 2: Hell Hulk Unleashed (issues #6–10), cementing its place as the penultimate chapter of a complete horror-superhero saga.

History

Hellverine #9 was produced by the same creative team that launched the ongoing series in December 2024: writer Benjamin Percy and artist/inker Raffaele Ienco, with colors by Bryan Valenza and letters by VC's Travis Lanham, edited by Mark Basso under Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski. The ongoing series itself grew directly from reader enthusiasm for the 'Ghost Rider/Wolverine: Weapons of Vengeance' crossover Percy wrote in 2023, which introduced the demon Bagra-ghul possessing Logan; the concept then transferred to Akihiro in a four-issue limited series before graduating to an ongoing. Percy described the trajectory as resembling a 'Cosmic Ghost Rider moment,' and the series was launched as part of Marvel's X-Men: From the Ashes initiative.
