Hellverine #8
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeHellverine #8 (cover-dated July 2025) is a pivotal chapter in Benjamin Percy's ongoing Hellverine saga because it delivers the full, unrestrained rampage of Hell Hulk — a demonic new character whose scattered body parts had been teased across prior issues — as the assembled monster tears through the underworld toward Mephisto's throne. The confrontation carries deliberate historical resonance: just as Wolverine first appeared in the Marvel Universe as an adversary of the Hulk, Percy and artist Raffaele Ienco consciously echo that legacy by pitting Akihiro's demon-fused persona against a hellish Hulk variant, completing a dark generational circle. Within the ongoing's structure, issue #8 marks the climactic escalation point of the 'Hell Hulk Unleashed' arc — the storyline later collected in the second Hellverine trade paperback — and significantly raises the dramatic stakes for Akihiro's hard-won identity as a hero rather than a monster.

The Hellverine ongoing that contains issue #8 grew directly out of sustained fan enthusiasm for the character Percy co-created with Geoff Shaw during the 2023 'Ghost Rider/Wolverine: Weapons of Vengeance' crossover, where the demon Bagra-ghul first possessed Logan. A successful four-issue limited series followed in 2024 (art by Julius Ohta), and in August 2024 Marvel announced a full ongoing — launched December 2024 — pairing Percy with artist Raffaele Ienco, who also designed the Hell Hulk character that becomes central to issue #8. Editor Mark Basso and Executive Editor Tom Brevoort oversaw the ongoing, which is also part of Marvel's 'X-Men: From the Ashes' franchise initiative.
Trivia · 8 facts
- Released July 2, 2025; written by Benjamin Percy with interior art by Raffaele Ienco and colors by Bryan Valenza; cover by Kendrick 'Kunkka' Lim.
- Hell Hulk — first teased in cameo in Hellverine (Vol. 2) #5 and first fully appearing in Hellverine (Vol. 2) #6 — is showcased in his most prominent and destructive role to date in issue #8, rampaging through the underworld and forcing even Mephisto to retreat.
- The issue is chapter 3 of the 'Hell Hulk Unleashed' arc, which is collected in Hellverine Vol. 2: Hell Hulk Unleashed (trade paperback, January 2026, collecting issues #6–10).
- Hell Hulk was designed by artist Raffaele Ienco, who also serves as the ongoing's series artist — making him both the creature's visual creator and its primary renderer in the story.
- The confrontation between Hellverine and Hell Hulk consciously calls back to Wolverine's own debut in Incredible Hulk #180 (1974), giving the story a self-aware generational symmetry within Marvel history.
- The issue's full cast also includes Mephisto, Severith (the Hell Hulk's creator, introduced in issue #6), and Project Hellfire operative Dr. Spivey — all part of the sprawling 'demonic underworld infrastructure' Percy began constructing in the ongoing's first arc.
- The ongoing series launched in December 2024 (cover-dated February 2025) as Akihiro/Daken's first-ever ongoing solo title, following his resurrection as a Ghost Rider/Wolverine hybrid — itself a direct result of events in the 2023 Weapons of Vengeance crossover and the 2024 limited series.
- The ongoing — and by extension issue #8 — is part of Marvel's 'X-Men: From the Ashes' publishing initiative, tying the Hellverine character into the broader post-Krakoa X-Men line.
