Hellblazer #228
Denise Mina and Leonardo Manco bring their "The Red Right Hand" arc to a close with this striking 2007 Vertigo issue, its cover painted by Lee Bermejo. The image is genuinely unsettling: a disheveled John Constantine sits enthroned amid churning golden clouds, flanked by winged demonic figures, while two kneeling supplicants — a young man and a dark-haired woman with hands clasped — gaze up at him in what looks like desperate prayer. It's a tableau that captures everything compelling about Constantine — the sense that he occupies some uneasy middle ground between savior and predator — and makes a fine, atmospheric capstone to the run.
